How to read a Chord Diagram
Before you can learn guitar chords you must understand the chord diagram.
You will use this to learn the hundreds of chords available.
A chord diagram is a grid representing the guitar neck as if you were looking at it from above.
The numbers in the photo represent the fingers:
T Thumb
1 Index
2 Middle
3 Ring
4 Little

The Verticle Chord Diagram

The six verticle lines represent the guitar strings.
The 6th string (low sound) to the 1rst string (high sound).
The Horizontal lines represent the frets.
The 0 means play that string without fretting it. (open)
The X means do not play that string
The number in the black circle represents the finger number that is placed on the string and fret.
Horizontal Chord Diagram

The six horizontal linesl lines represent the guitar strings.
The 6th string (low sound) to the 1rst string (high sound).
The verticle lines represent the frets.
The 0 means play that string without fretting it. (open)
The X means do not play that string
The number in the black circle represents the finger number that is placed on the string and fret.
The chord diagram is good to know because you will find a chord diagram
in almost all music chord books.
From this point on I am using the horizontal method as shown below.
It seems more natural to me to view chords this way,
because this is how you view the guitar neck when you are playing.

The strings are left to right from the nut just like your guitar, the frets are verticle.
You need now to learn how to read and understand tablature or "Tabs"
